Position Summary: Under the supervision of Police Sergeant, answer emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio calls from general public, law enforcement, fire department within the scope of Federal Communications Commission regulations.
Take appropriate action, including the dispatching of units.
Enforce security regulations of the Dispatch Center.
Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports.
All Tribal Police staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Dispatch Responsibilities: Receive information from Public Service, Safety agencies, and citizens requesting emergency information or assistance; initiate appropriate action, effectively, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
Operate audio telecommunications and computer equipment with a high degree of accuracy; maintain applicable log and forms.
Maintain a high degree of accuracy with regards to location of city and country roads, hospitals, schools, mobile home parks, subdivisions, condominium/apartment complexes, major public building, fire districts/boundaries; EMS zones, police districts and keeps current information on road and street conditions, detours and other factors that might affect emergency vehicle routing.
Relay information as required to emergency vehicles, members of certain agencies, as well as other agencies and/or firms and companies.
Use maps, cross reference books, phone books, technology and other resources made available to locate street addresses and/or other information.
Ascertain that consoles, vehicle status, pertinent data and records are in proper order at the end of shift.
Perform all functions related to recording equipment.
Give radio checks and tone tests as required.
Report equipment failures immediately to proper authority for repairs as well as documenting difficulties to the supervisor.
Monitor civil defense equipment as required and notify proper authorities of any and all special statements or warnings.
Use available time on duty to study information and accumulate knowledge pertaining to the communications position.
Brief oncoming shift of any pertinent information outstanding at the time of the shift change and events of the shift including unusual calls, procedure variations/changes, radio conditions and the like.
Keep the Communications, Dispatch Center, and related work areas clean and orderly.
Work rotating shifts with varying days on and off.
Prepare reports and forms as requested; type and file reports pertaining to the Dispatch Center as required.
Ensure conformance with established policies and procedures.
Other Responsibilities: Provide excellent community service with courtesy, integrity and professionalism.
Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times.
Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
Knowledge of self-defense and related defense and control equipment.
Knowledge of current Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) policies and procedures and keep current with LEIN bulletins.
Knowledge of the scope, landmarks and geographical locations within the Reservation.
Knowledge of principles and practices of radio dispatch and communication.
Skill in the operation of computers and office equipment that includes copier, telephone and audio equipment.
Skill in preparing clear, concise, accurate, and complete written reports.
Skill in maintaining composure under stressful or dangerous conditions.
Ability to operate radio communication equipment, digital recording equipment, computer printers and facsimile machine and photocopy machine.
Ability to perform duties under stress, maintain composure and professionalism under stressful conditions and in the face of provocation.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the community.
Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.

Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials Employee may be exposed to hazardous, uncontrollable and life-threatening situations and infectious disease Evening, weekend, and/or holiday work will be required.
Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
Travel may be required.
Job Requirements High School Diploma or GED.
Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

License, Certification, or Special Requirements: Must have a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with the proper designation required for the vehicle utilized to perform the job duties; must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver’s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
