Greenleaf Instrument Collection embodies Interlochen’s leadership role in the coming of age of American musical education.
At the heart of the collection are the rare and fascinating instruments from the C.
G.
Conn company, led by Greenleaf family members foundational in the history of the National Music Camp.
The collection plays an educational and inspirational role for students, musicians, and visitors, with some 300 instruments.
The majority are brass and woodwinds, representing a strong band tradition, with the addition of specimens dating back to the 1700s and an impressive array of ethnomusicological instruments.
The role of the Curator is one of stewardship, scholarship, and mentorship.
The Curator makes the collection as accessible as possible while preserving, maintaining, and enhancing it.
This includes creating informational materials, serving as docent, and assisting those studying the instruments.
It also involves oversight of the handling, repair and use of these historic instruments, management of the collection as an archival entity, and leadership on promotion and fellowship projects related to the collection.
This position is ideally suited to a musician fluent in brass and woodwinds with a deep love of history, a passion for learning, and experience in instrument repair.
Research, writing, and teaching are vital in enhancing the value of this collection.
The Curator reports to the Director of Libraries and works closely with the Archive staff.
Hours are variable and can include evenings and weekends.
A year-round position, its duties vary between the 6-week summer Camp session and the academic year of the boarding high school.
Notably, during the summer the Curator will oversee a Visiting Fellow who comes to do an in-depth study on instruments in the collection.
The Curator plays an essential role in Interlochen’s mission by expanding creative capacity, sparking interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating networks of interest and inspiration.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Oversee the care and use of the Collection Maintain safe storage conditions Coordinate instrument cleaning & repair Work with Academy students and visitors who require access to the collection Oversee up to five Greenleaf Student Fellows doing projects involving the Greenleaf Determine level of access based on requestor and condition of instrument Evaluate donations to the Collection, updating inventory as needed Represent the Collection as spokesperson Enhance Educational Opportunities Based on the Collection Introduce students to the collection as a resource Reach out to experts, alumni, and professionals to cultivate an active knowledge core Manage use of Greenleaf educational assets such as documents, photography Organize Greenleaf document archives Oversee publications, promotions, website, etc.
involving the Greenleaf Organize symposia on specific instruments or themes Produce or acquire scholarly articles based on Greenleaf instruments Integrate deliverables from Summer Fellowships into Greenleaf resources Enhance knowledge of and accessibility to the ethnomusicological instruments Explore Opportunities to Showcase the Collection Increase connections to professional organizations, museums, and communities of interest Consider actual or virtual exhibits Work with Centennial Committee on possible projects such as displays, concerts, dedicatory musical commissions, pep bands, publication of scholarly articles, etc.
Organize pep band Manage Greenleaf Visiting Fellow Lead the selection of each summer’s Visiting Fellow Work with Director of Libraries, Philanthropy, and Human Resources to determine summer budget, deliverables, and contract specifics Oversee restoration work on instruments Regularly meet with Fellow to ensure compliance with institutional and contractual expectations Approve all uses of Greenleaf materials by Fellow before publication or promotion Application Materials Required: Cover Letter Resume Experience and Skills: Master’s degree in music history or something related to museum curatorship required Experience as a musician educator Demonstrated interest in scholarship Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute positively to the overall artistic and educational environment at Interlochen A genuine passion for education and a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment Strong communication skills, both in one-on-one interactions and in broader community engagement This position is ideally suited to a musician fluent in brass and woodwinds with a deep love of history, a passion for learning, and experience in instrument repair Research, writing, and teaching are vital in enhancing the value of this collection Beyond the traditional classroom responsibilities, all faculty at IAA assist in providing student mentorship and advising for aspiring artists in a boarding school setting.
The Interlochen 5, key capacities that IAA faculty help reinforce, include mindfulness, wellness and resilience, creative capacity, interdisciplinary perspective and collaboration, global and cultural perspective, and community and citizen artistry.
All Academy faculty focus on educating the whole student, working with high school students to develop their artistry and citizenship.
